Pinterest for Publishers @ BuzzFeed HQ
On Tuesday night (March 4th) Pinterest & BuzzFeed hosted an event at BuzzFeed HQ in NYC specifically for publishers. Here are a collection of takeaways I found particularly interesting:
Tram Nguyen, Partner Manager at Pinterest:
- Average Number of Boards Per User = 10
- Average Number of Boards Users Pin to Daily = 4
- Average Number of Times a Pin is Repinned = 10
- Less than 2% of Pins are User Generated Content
- 10% of Pins are Articles (5 million Pins each day)
- 75% of Pintersest’s usage is from Mobile Apps
Also, they are working on a Bulk API Upload feature – stay tuned!
Dao Nguyen, VP of Growth & Data, BuzzFeed:
- Pinterest is Buzzfeed’s 3rd Largest Referrer (Worldwide)
- As expected Pinterest refers a lot of traffic in Beauty, Home, Crafts, Family, Food, but also in some surprising areas such as Tattoos, Humor, Books, & Disney
- 60% of Pinterest traffic goes to posts older than 2 months old
- BuzzFeed specially designs header images for their posts that pin well (vertical, include catchy post title in graphic).
- 77% of referred traffic from Pinterest comes from Mobile
- 59% iPhone/iPod
- 24% iPad
- 17% Android
- 60% of mobile pinning action happens from the image overly Pin button versus 22% from the page’s top share bar and 17% of the page’s bottom share bar.
- Users that come to BuzzFeed from Pinterest almost always choose to Pin subsequent articles they find. BuzzFeed rearranges their social sharing icon ordering to put the traffic referrer first.
- Also show a “Hot on Pinterest” widget for users whose referral source is Pinterest
- Pinterest usage is strongly during Nights & Weekends
PJ Anderson, Partners at Pinterest:
- Repin Sources:
- 25% Home Feed
- 20% Boards
- 55% Feeds & Search
- ~ 40% from Category Landing Pages
- Taller Aspect Ratio images have higher Repin & Interaction Rates (take up more area in their feed)
- Positive & Descriptive descriptions also have higher engagement/repins
…there were a lot of other fantastic presenters with great information, but these are just some highlights. Many thanks to the BuzzFeed & Pinterest Teams for putting on such an informative event!
