What I’m Thinking: An Open Letter to the Men in My Life

Dear Men,
Maybe now that you have a little more context into the world we inhabit as women thanks to the #metoo campaign, i.e. constantly being threatened and made to feel powerless and told that our only self worth is in our physical appearance – maybe now you have a bit more insight why we women sometimes lose our sh$t over what appears to be trivial setbacks like finding out Zumba class has been canceled and burst into tears.
We live in a world of pressure that we are not allowed to vent as we swim upstream in a constant battle of injustices, but instead must take it all with a smile and often even wind up defending or excusing our aggressors.
So goshdarnit, we were really looking forward to that endorphin release of that pressure-valve in an environment where we can unselfconsciously move our bodies freely in a safe space without risking attack and then being blamed because we were “asking for it” by doing so.
Do we KNOW that there will be Zumba next week? Yes.
Do we KNOW that we can do something else instead like going for a run? Yes.
Do we KNOW that it’s not that big of a deal? Yes.
We don’t want you to try to solve our problems or fight our battles for us. All we want is what every single human being craves at their core: LISTEN to our story and ACKNOWLEDGE our struggle. Give us your SUPPORT us and tell us it’s going to be OK.
And by ‘it’ of course, we don’t mean Zumba (or whatever other seemingly trivial setback set us off), we mean ALL of IT.
Thank you.
