Sh*t Digital Media People Say Cheat Sheet
OK, so the “Sh*t <insert group> Say” meme is practically prehistoric by internet meme standards, but I just stumbled upon this video by eXelate and I thought it was pretty well done. It’s also a super quick means to gaining insight into digital marketing culture. And with insight comes improved communication. Here’s the non-digital media folks guide to the some of the lingo you may not be familiar with:
- Under 25 Folks – Traditionally advertisers have targeted the 25-54 demographic, recently however, there is a push to understand this younger previously overlooked group. Here’s a good post from Neilsen Wire on the subject.
- Luma Slide – LUMA Partners compiles sector landscapes into “LUMAscapes” to help visually organize industry ecosystems. While these guys are obviously referring to the Display slide, there are also ones on Search, Commerce, Mobile, Social, and Gaming which you might find helpful!
- Randall Rothenburg – President & CEO of the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB). Here’s his Wikipedia page for more.
- SSP – Sell Side Platform (IAB Wiki)
- DMP – Data Management Platform (DMP on IAB’s Wiki)
- RTB – Real-Time Buying (or Bidding) system for ads (RTB on IAB’s Wiki)
- BLT – Gotcha! This one separates the digital media folks from the rest of us. Just the sandwich guys.
- OPP – I’ll let Naughty by Nature handle this one.
- IAB – Interactive Advertising Bureau is a global nonprofit group comprised of more than 500 leading media and technology companies. In addition to creating standards and best-practices, they also hold large annual conferences.
- Digiday – A media company and community for digital media, marketing, and advertising professionals. They also hold many summit events each year.
- MediaPost – Source for media, marketing, and advertising news and events.
- AdExchanger Cartoon – Weekly comic strip from AdExchanger about the digital advertising ecosystem.
- AdWeek – A magazine and website that covers media news.
- Ace Hotel – A swanky place to hang out whether you’re in advertising or not!
I think that covers all the major ones in the video. Any others that you weren’t familiar with? Let me know in the comments!
